St. Alban's has been a favourite for weddings for a long time because of its quaint and historic building. Many people whose parents were married here would like to be married in the same building as their parents were. However, we usually have many more inquiries than we can accommodate.
So for the last ten years or so we have followed the Diocesan policy and the traditional approach to marriages in church. This practice encourages people to celebrate their marriages in their local parish church. Therefore, marriages for those living outside this parish and who are not regular members of St Alban's congregations are not normally celebrated at St. Alban's. However, please you are welcome to contact us as your wedding may be possible.
If you live outside the Highgate parish we would encourage you to consider being married in your local church. A list of Anglican parish churches can be found at this linked webpage.
If you live in the parish please join us in one of our regular services and make yourself known to one of the ministers. Or contact us by phone or email.
If you are a regular attender at a church of another denomination, we encourage you to be married by your own minister in the place where your church normally meets. Marriages in Anglican churches have to be conducted by Anglican clergy. If you are looking for a traditional style building we encourage you to speak to your pastor who probably already knows of buildings he or she is able to use for weddings.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Both the Bride and Groom need to be at least 18 years of age when you are married.
You need to complete a "Notice of Intended Marriage" Form and give it to the celebrant at least one full calendar month before your proposed marriage date. The minister who agrees to marry you has these forms.
If you were born in Australia, you need to show the celebrant an original issue of your full birth certificate (a photocopy is unacceptable). If you were born overseas, then you will need to produce an original of your full birth certificate, or if for some reason this is unavailable, a current overseas passport may be acceptable. If you are divorced or widowed you will also need to provide legal documentary evidence of this to the celebrant.
At least one of you should be a member of the Anglican Church.
You should be wanting to celebrate Christian Marriage rather than merely have a "church wedding".
If either of you have been divorced, the celebrant needs the permission of the Bishop to remarry you. Conditions apply. Speak to your local minister to find out more.
Only Anglican clergy can celebrate marriages in Anglican Church buildings.
